No. Self-guided walking tours on the glacier were discontinued in 2021. You must book a certified guide to walk on the ice.
Yes. The state recreation site at Mile 101 charges a small day-use fee for its viewing trails. Ice access through the private property at Mile 102 has its own fee (recent listings: about $55 per adult), and a guided tour is required; ask your operator whether it is included.
The actual time spent on the ice is usually 1.5 to 3 hours. Full-day tours departing from Anchorage take 6 to 8 hours including driving.

Breathtaking Views and an Unforgettable Adventure! An incredible experience hiking the Matanuska Glacier! We had beautiful weather, stunning views, and fantastic guides who were knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive to safety. The spectacular blue ice formations made every step worthwhile! Highly recommend it!
Izzy was a great guide. She was very knowledgeable and fun and did her best to ensure that all the people on our tour had a safe and fun experience.
Great trip. Walking on the glacier was amazing. Our guide was very good and, even though I sprained my foot, we had a wonderful time. The honey and wine tasting was of limited value
